Types of Feng Shui
Energy interacts with the flows or obstructions we create and respond accordingly. A feng shui audit will identify these and provide solutions to create the harmonious flow that is needed. Once this flow is activated we will then experience a more harmonious and happier environment which will contribute to our personal success.
With the 'ancient-ness' of this practice it is understandable that many schools of thought had evolved over the thousands of years it has been practiced. Following are the main schools that evolved and a brief explanation of their practices.
Form School
This school looked purely at the physical environment and how it impacted us. The practice looked at mountainous ranges, buildings, rivers, roads etc and how the shape or location of these contributed to our success or demise.
This is a very important school and is used in conjunction with other schools of thought in a complimentary way to identify key issues or areas for improvement.
Black Hat
This school developed a simplified version of the ba gua and the theory is that each part of a property represented certain aspects of our lives.
This chart is to be used where the career sector is always laid over your entry or main door of the property and subsequent recommendations were given to 'cure' or fix areas that may be deficient or missing and to enhance other areas. This type of analysis is considered to be very basic as it does not take into account the passage of time or explain how different events can occur in a property over time.
8 House
This school of though uses the ba gua and a personal calculation called the Life Gua to look at property feng shui.
It is referred to as the floating or wandering stars and can also be called the Purple White method of feng shui.
The analysis involves a property being divided into eight sections and each section has a different energy or wandering star assigned to it. Four sections are positive and four are negative. The way these sections are assigned are by conducting a compass reading of the property to find its 'facing'. This particular activity of finding the facing is also done in the Flying Star School and considers the direction that energy enters a property.
The sectors, depending on the compass direction of the property bring the following:
Sector Properties
| Number |
Property |
| Fortunate 1 |
Vitality |
| Fortunate 2 |
Enhancement of health, rewards for hard work |
| Fortunate 3 |
Longevity, wealth |
| Fortunate 4 |
Stability |
| Harmful 1 |
Life threatening |
| Harmful 2 |
Sickness, Fire, Theft |
| Harmful 3 |
Lawsuit, Health problems |
| Harmful 4 |
Arguments, Disputes |
The analysis looks at the fortunate areas and proposes that the bedrooms, front door and kitchen be in these areas, with the bathrooms and storage areas in the harmful areas.
These sectors are enhanced or corrected via the 5 elements. Each are assigned an element and are controlled, enhanced or weakened according to their status and relevant element relationships.
Along with these sectors within the property another level of analysis is added where the Life Gua of a person is calculated which gives us our individual positive and negative directions. The 8 different guas coincide with the 8 possible configurations of the property and are split into two groups, the east and west groups. A person with a gua in the east group would be best in an east group house. Therefore they can take advantage of not only positive sectors but also positive directions according to their gua.
This is not always possible and this school has many recommendations that can be made to counteract negativities.
Flying Star
This school of Feng Shui is more appropriately name the Time Space school of feng shui and is the most used by professional masters & consultants as it not only takes into account the layout, direction and form in and around the property but it also looks at time and the energies that change over time which can influence the property in different ways.
There have been many buildings that are still standing after centuries, however different events happened over the passages of time and the flying star analysis can provide insight into why.
Along with deriving a compass reading of the property from which a chart is drawn up using the Lo Shu and He Tu theories, the year the property was built is also taken into consideration along with any renovations or rehabilitations that have been done to the property over time.
Groups of the 5 elements are also assigned to each of the 8 sections of the property which are derived from the property age, yearly and monthly influences. This involves a very dynamic form of analysis including form, color, human activity and water flow (virtual or real) which are very strong considerations when looking at all of the feng shui aspects of a property.
Water Formula
This school of feng shui looks specifically at the water flow real or virtual in our external environment. This can be in the form of rivers, lakes, streams, drains, gutters and even roads.
It involves laying out certain directions for water to flow for prosperity, health and happiness for the occupants of the property and can contribute to a positive outcome when looking at macro feng shui.
